Culminating a super season of stupendous racing, Jimmy “The Newport Nightmare” Owens defended his Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series crown with another championship season, taking the highly contested series’ win for three consecutive years, in his Öhlins suspension-equipped number-20 Reece Monument car.
Owens, from Newport, Tennessee, earned eight wins during this 40-race season (eight of a scheduled 48 cancelled due to weather) and a slew of point-worthy podiums and top-ten finishes, showing the consistency necessary even when a win wasn’t there after the dust or mud settled.
Finishing second in the points was another on Öhlins shocks, Steve Francis in his number-15 Georgia Boot car, who came on stronger and stronger as the year progressed, and was the only challenger to Owens during the last third of the season. Öhlins USA congratulates Jimmy Owens and Steve Francis, and all other using Öhlins, who’ve each added commensurately to Öhlins’ lengthening list of Late Model Dirt laurels.
